About

The Encyclopedia of Canadian Sport (ECS) was founded to increase the accessibility and credibility of online information pertaining to the nation’s sporting culture, past and present. All entries in the ECS are subjected to peer review. We welcome submissions on a wide variety of topics including, but not limited to, athletes, organizations, social issues, governance, and development, reflective of Canada’s diverse social and cultural landscape. Although calls for thematic submissions will be ongoing, we welcome unsolicited entries, on any aspect of Canadian sport. We are particularly interested in  promoting the ECS as a platform for collaboration between established academics and their undergraduate and graduate students. The online nature of the ECS also provides the opportunity for authors to conduct periodic updates of their work, reflecting the newest scholarship in the many sub-fields of sport studies.

Style

The ECS follows a general encyclopedic format. Special attention should be given to significant dates, events, and people throughout all entries. All submissions should adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style for endnotes. At the moment, we can only accept entries in English, but hope to transition to a bilingual platform with the first 12 months of operation.  The length of submissions will vary by subject matter.

Peer Review

All submissions are initially reviewed by the editor to ensure quality and relevance. Upon the editor’s approval, the submission will be reviewed by two scholars: the editor plus one additional reviewer. Although the editor will know the author’s identity, the second reader’s review will be blind. The reviewers have three options: Accept with minor revision; accept with major revision; or reject. If either of the reviewers opt to reject the submission, the work will not go forward into the encyclopedia. At the editor’s discretion, a longer time frame may be provided for rejected authors to rework their submissions and resubmit, but the review process will begin anew. We recognize that time is of the essence when it comes to review and publication. If a reviewer takes more than one month to examine a submission, it will be handed off to another expert in the field.

Publication

All submissions will published online. Each entry can be updated as new scholarship becomes available (the original author will always be contacted to collaborate on such revisions).
